Tel Aviv, Then and Now — The Beginning and the Eternal is the third work in Eliran Bar-On's Tel Aviv Then and Now series, and it returns to the city's first street, Ahad Ha'am. Where the earlier paintings focused on architecture, here he focuses on people, on souls. From the left of the canvas, out of sepia and grey, the visionaries emerge — dark figures in the suits and hats of another era, looking as if they have just stepped out of the lottery that founded the city, a group of living shadows gazing toward the future they built with their own hands. Facing them, on the right and in the centre, bursts the Tel Aviv of today: the eclectic corner building washed in warm yellow light, parked cars staining the street with modern colour, and behind them a blue glass tower piercing the sky. The perspective pulls the eye into the depth of the street, to the impossible meeting point between then and now, one street holding two parallel axes of time. For the artist this is an act of respect: when we walk the city's streets we tread on history, breathing the air of those who dreamed this city out of nothing. The contrast between the heavy dark founders on the left and the light, colourful present on the right is the contrast between the weight of history and the rhythm of life — a reversal in which the past is solid and the present fleeting.

זוהי היצירה השלישית בסדרת "תל אביב אז והיום", והיא חוזרת אל הרחוב הראשון – רחוב אחד העם. אם בציורים הקודמים התמקדתי בארכיטקטורה, כאן אני מתמקד באנשים. בנשמות. בצד שמאל של הקנבס, מתוך גווני הספיה והאפור, מגיחים הם – אנשי החזון. הדמויות הכהות, לבושות בחליפות ובכובעים של פעם, נראות כאילו יצאו הרגע מ"הגרלת הצדפים". הם עומדים שם, קבוצה של צללים חיים, ומביטים אל עבר העתיד שיצרו במו ידיהם. דיאלוג בין החולות למגדלים מולם, בצד ימין ובמרכז, מתפרצת תל אביב של 2024. הבניין הפינתי האקלקטי שטוף באור צהבהב חם, המכוניות החונות צובעות את הרחוב בכתמי צבע מודרניים, וברקע – מגדל זכוכית כחול שדוקר את השמיים. הפרספקטיבה בציור מושכת את העין אל עומק הרחוב, אל נקודת המפגש הבלתי אפשרית בין אז להיום. זהו רחוב אחד, שמכיל בתוכו שני צירי זמן מקבילים. השורשים מתחת לאספלט עבורי, הציור הזה הוא אקט של כבוד. כשאנחנו הולכים ברחובות העיר, אנחנו דורכים על היסטוריה. אנחנו נושמים את האוויר של אלו שחלמו את העיר הזו מתוך הכלום. הניגוד בין הדמויות הכהות והכבדות משמאל לבין הקלילות והצבעוניות של הימין הוא הניגוד שבין הכובד של ההיסטוריה לבין הקצב של החיים. הדמויות מימין למטה, הילדים או עוברי האורח, נראים כמעט שקופים מול הנוכחות המסיבית של המייסדים. זהו היפוך תפקידים: העבר הוא המוצק, ההווה הוא החולף. זו יצירה שמזמינה אותנו לעצור את המירוץ, להביט הצידה, ולראות את הרוחות הטובות שמלוות את העיר הזו מיומה הראשון.
