I paint in oil because it refuses to hurry. The material stays open for hours, letting a face or a street keep changing under the brush until it finally tells the truth. I was trained in the old techniques — layered glazes, a patient build from dark to light — but I let the surface stay alive and the marks visible, so that you can always sense the hand that made the picture. A painting, for me, is not a photograph. It is a record of attention.
My work moves between two poles. On one side there are intimate portraits, where I am less interested in likeness than in frequency: the particular charge a person gives off when they forget they are being watched. On the other side there are the streets of Tel Aviv, especially the older ones, which I paint as a way of stopping time. Between the two runs the larger Israeli narrative that I cannot stop looking at.
Some of my paintings begin in joy: a musician mid-performance, two hands releasing a balloon into a wide blue sky. Others begin in grief, in a morning that tore the country in two. I try not to soften either one. I believe painting can hold what words cannot, and that a canvas is honest precisely when it does not explain itself too much.
Much of my recent work belongs to an ongoing series I think of as the Israeli Narrative. Painting has also been, for me, a form of repair: a way to gather the fragments of hard years and look at them directly. If a painting works, it keeps speaking after you have left the room. That is the only measure I trust.

אני מצייר בשמן כי הוא מסרב למהר. החומר נשאר פתוח שעות, ומאפשר לפנים או לרחוב להשתנות תחת המכחול עד שהם מספרים סוף סוף את האמת. התאמנתי בטכניקות הישנות — שכבות גלזורה, בנייה סבלנית מהכהה אל הבהיר — אבל אני משאיר את פני השטח חיים ואת משיכות המכחול גלויות, כדי שתמיד תרגישו את היד שיצרה את הציור. ציור, מבחינתי, אינו צילום. הוא תיעוד של תשומת לב.
העבודה שלי נעה בין שני קטבים. מצד אחד פורטרטים אינטימיים, שבהם אני פחות מתעניין בדמיון ויותר בתדר: המטען המיוחד שאדם משדר כשהוא שוכח שמביטים בו. מצד שני רחובות תל אביב, במיוחד הישנים, שאותם אני מצייר כדרך לעצור את הזמן. ביניהם עובר הנרטיב הישראלי הגדול שאני לא מפסיק להביט בו.
חלק מהציורים שלי נולדים מתוך שמחה, וחלק מתוך כאב — מבוקר אחד שקרע את המדינה לשניים. אני משתדל לא לרכך אף אחד מהם. אני מאמין שציור יכול להכיל את מה שמילים לא יכולות, ושקנבס כן דווקא כשהוא לא מסביר את עצמו יותר מדי.
חלק גדול מהעבודות האחרונות שייך לסדרה שאני קורא לה הנרטיב הישראלי. הציור היה עבורי גם סוג של תיקון: דרך לאסוף את שברי השנים הקשות ולהביט בהם ישירות. אם ציור עובד, הוא ממשיך לדבר גם אחרי שיצאת מהחדר. זו המידה היחידה שאני סומך עליה.
